- Accidents that have occurred more than 12 miles / 19,3 km offshore in open waters are classified under one of the three oceans.
- In most cases, the geographical regions represent sovereign states. Exceptions are for instance: the Oceans and geographical areas like Greenland, Hong Kong (a Special Administrative Region of China), etc.
- For each accident, the current geographical region is given. Thus, a 1966 accident at Ljubljana (then part of Yugoslavia) is listed under “Slovenia” as Ljubljana is now part of Slovenia.
