Narrative:19.9.15: Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c No. 1133, RNAS Whitley Bay. Written off (destroyed) when Spun into the ground off a flat turn and caught fire on impact, Hartley, ½m from Whitley Bay aerodrome, Whitley Bay, Northumberland. Pilot - Flt Sub-Lt Douglas Archibald Hay (aged 25) - died 20.9.15 (next day) of injuries sustained
RNAS Whitley Bay was about a mile and a half north of the village, adjacent to St Mary's lighthouse. The site had been a rifle range before the war. It is now used as a caravan park. The death of Douglas Archibald Hay was the only fatality during the operational life of RNAS Whitley Bay.
